Earth, water, fire, air and ether—five simple anchors for bringing a Vastu-aligned home into daily practice.
Vastu Shastra organises a home around the five elements, or Panchabhuta: earth, water, fire, air and ether. Rather than abstract forces, each is assigned a direction and a practical role in daily life.
The five, in brief
- Earth (Bhumi) — the south-west; grounding, stability, heavier furniture.
- Water (Jal) — the north-east; clarity, a small fountain or clean bowl of water.
- Fire (Agni) — the south-east; the kitchen and anything that generates heat.
- Air (Vayu) — the north-west; ventilation, movement, guest spaces.
- Ether (Akasha) — the centre (Brahmasthan); kept open, light and uncluttered.
A simple weekly practice
You do not need to rebuild a home to work with the elements. Open the north-west windows for an hour a day, keep a bowl of clean water in the north-east, and leave the centre of the home clear of storage. Small, repeated gestures keep all five in balance far more reliably than one large renovation.
